This past week, a group of our staff once again had the opportunity to take part in the Redfern and Aboriginal History Walking Tour with a local Aboriginal Elder, Donna Ingram, a proud Wiradjuri woman who was born and raised on Gadigal land in Sydney.

The walk was an immersive journey through the heart of Aboriginal culture in Sydney, with an insightful 90-minute walking tour of Redfern guided by Donna who has strong connections to the area. The tour focused on the social and political history of Redfern, the epicentre of Aboriginal activism and it still plays a big role in Aboriginal people’s connection to their identity.

One of our staff members reflected on the experience, saying:

The walk was an eye-opening experience—I gained so much insight into the deep history, resilience, and cultural strength of the local Aboriginal community. “ - Louise

Another attendee shared:

Walking with Aunty Donna felt like belonging, learning about Redfern’s rich history in political movements for Aboriginal right’s was incredibly inspiring. Through all the pain and discrimination endured, they fought for their rights, their people and their freedom. I think it was also important to see the strength of all the allies that fought beside them, to let them swim in the pools with them and have access to the same rights. Through the courageous efforts of all these people, they made big movements forward in society and the precedents we have today. I am honoured to have been a part of this experience and learn so much about this mob, I hope that more people participate in the future to learn about this.“ - Elektra

Australian Mutual Bank is grateful for the opportunity to continue learning and strengthening our connection with Aboriginal history and culture.
