To kick off National Reconciliation Week (NRW) for 2025, a group of staff members once again had the opportunity to take part in the Redfern and Aboriginal History Walking Tour, an experience many team members have valued in recent times.
As on previous occasions, the walk was led by Local Aboriginal Elder, Donna Ingram, a proud Wiradjuri woman. The tour was a meaningful journey through Aboriginal culture in Sydney, exploring Redfern’s rich social and political history, a place that’s long been at the heart of Aboriginal activism and still holds strong significance for identity and community today.
One of the attendees shared their thoughts on the experience:
“It was an honour to be shown the history of what was a time of pain and suffering and to learn that through unity and change, positive outcomes surfaced. Walking through Redfern, seeing the beautiful artworks & statue, allowed you to see and reflect through the eyes that have lived….through past and present. It was a privilege to walk beside Aunty Donna who shared stories where tears flow and stories of triumph, when freedom was sought and their voices heard.” - Therese
Another staff member added:
“It was a privilege to have the opportunity to join Aunty Donna on a walking tour and learn about Redfern’s rich history. Behind every story was a sense of strength and unity amongst Australia’s First Nations Peoples during some difficult times in history. A very humbling cultural learning experience that I truly recommend.” - Mark
It’s experiences like this that highlights the importance of meaningful connection with community, especially during NRW.
