How to prepare yourself for financial loss

It’s something no one wants to think about, but is a reality many of us will face at some point in our careers. What happens when our income gets taken away?

In our twenty years together I’ve seen my husband through three redundancies. Once while I was in the early stages of labour, about to welcome our first baby. I had just paused paid employment in order to become a mum and my husband was the only income earner in our home. We got through it and we managed to get through it each time afterwards. Those periods in our life were not exactly highlights but we certainly learnt plenty about resilience, perseverance and to trust that things would work out for the better. They did, each time. I’ve had my own fair share of career shifts over that time too. Change can be hard, and it can be harder when our finances take a hit as well.

Losing a source of income can rattle us and bring up questions of ‘what did I do wrong’ or ‘how could I have done it better’. Regardless of whether you are the best at what you do or not, everyone, even the self-employed can be faced with a sudden loss of income without warning.

Here are some strategies to put into place now so you have something to fall back on if your job security changes.

Have an emergency fund

Always have an account you do not touch unless you are in dire straits. Keep at least $5,000 in it if possible or work toward that balance if you’re only starting out. Ideally $10,000 in a high interest account is a nice amount to fall back on if you are facing several months of no income or unexpected expenses. An emergency fund might help to take the sting out of sudden income loss.

Don’t burn your bridges

Whether you’ve been fired, been made redundant or had a contract end, if it’s possible, ask for a written reference before you leave. In addition to a physical reference, ask your employer if they would mind being an ‘on call’ referee as you seek out alternative employment and let them know if they should expect a call once you are in the process of attending interviews. Stay in touch with colleagues and contacts you enjoyed working with. Just because you’re leaving doesn’t mean you have to say goodbye to friends for good. If it is possible, negotiate a package so you can leave with some financial backing as you get back on your feet.

Don’t be afraid to ask for support

Pride often gets in the way of seeking support when we need it, but something significant like job loss or financial stress often hits harder than we expect. It can affect our confidence levels, cause anxiety about the future as well as present us with very real financial difficulties. It’s important to let loved ones know what you’re going through so they can support you emotionally and check in to see that you’re ok. If you are struggling emotionally or financially there are also professional support services available to help you through tough times. Hot lines such as Beyond Blue or Lifeline can support you over the phone. Financial Counsellors can assist you to put together a strategy and budget to get through financial hardship and a qualified therapist can give you face to face support where needed.

Surrender to the unknown

I’ve always believed things happen for us, not to us. While we rarely have control over external influence and change, we do have the capacity to decide how to respond to what happens to us. And if we choose to be open-minded, reflective and optimistic about what the future might hold, we will more likely be able to navigate the challenges along the way.

A job loss or sudden change in work commitments can be a shock and bring disappointment and fear; however it also might open up the opportunity for something new and more aligned. Perhaps it’s time to carve out a career you love. Rather than falling into a deep dark hole of depression, look at the space that has become available and ask yourself how you can best use this new free time.

Detach from the story

More often than not, losing an income stream is less about you and more about what is going on in the bigger picture. It is likely a business decision first, and the decision to let you go might not be personal at all. It could be more about keeping costs down, not because you didn’t do a good job. Don’t assume it’s all your fault.

Reflect and redirect

Any time we leave something significant, whether it is a job or a relationship, it is important to reflect on the situation and see where we might have done things differently. Not in order to go backwards but to move forward with clarity and confidence. We aren’t meant to live stagnant-stay-the-same lives. Life is meant to ebb and flow, shift and change so we may experience the highs, the lows and all of the in between. We cannot experience something new if we are always clinging to the old.

If you do have the opportunity to ask for feedback before you end a working relationship, take the opportunity to enquire if there was anything you could have done for things to have ended differently. If there are areas to improve on, take them on board as best you can so you can learn and move forward.

Refresh your resume´

If it has been a while since you last looked for work, it is likely you will need to update your CV. There are plenty of templates available online if you need a little guidance. Formatting has changed over the years, so if it has been a couple of years or more you should check your CV reflects current standards. Add any experience that may be missing (including the role you are concluding), along with any new skills, qualifications, or certificates gained during your time in the position. Don’t downplay your talents and strengths, let them shine through.

Include two to three professional references, ideally a manager or supervisor from your most recent role, or a colleague with whom you had a strong working relationship and who is happy to act as your referee.

Step forward with gratitude and grace

When a chapter ends you may feel a range of emotions, from shame, disappointment, resentment and grief. But can you also look back on what you really enjoyed about that work? What did you love about it? Who did you meet and enjoy connecting with? What did you learn and what new skills do you now have under your belt as a result? Looking at the good as well as allowing space for the other stuff can help to propel you up and out of a potential dip in depression and move you toward embracing exciting possibilities with grace.

Get more for your second hand car

Buying a car second-hand can be a great way to save money. Purchasing a car privately will often result in even better value. Dealerships generally add significant markups to cover overheads and profit margins, so buyers are increasingly looking at the private market for fairer prices. Due to a healthy demand for secondhand vehicles, selling your car privately, rather than trading it in or selling it to a used car dealership could result in a higher sale price for you. With the right preparation and research, you can maximise your return while still offering buyers great value.

Here are some tips to get more money for your second hand car.

Know your car’s true value

Before you advertise your car for sale, ensure you research the market price first. Websites such as Redbook, Facebook Marketplace and CarsGuide will all give you an idea of the market value of your car. Use these platforms to compare cars with the same model, year, kms on the clock, location and condition. This research will help you to set a firm baseline price, so you don’t undersell your vehicle. Price your car a bit above your base price to allow some space for negotiation.

Get your car serviced

Gain trust from potential buyers and ensure you are selling a high-quality, well-maintained vehicle. It is recommended by most car manufacturers to have a vehicle serviced every 6 months or every 10,000 kms to keep your car running smoothly long into the future. Even if your car has high mileage, a regularly serviced car should still maintain its value.

Having your car serviced regularly means the vehicle is being routinely assessed, so issues are addressed as they arise. Delayed servicing may result in a minor issue turning into a more expensive problem down the track. Plus, a potential buyer will be more likely to commit to a sale if your vehicle has a regular service history. Provide a service logbook or receipts of most recent services so potential buyers can see what has recently been fixed, replaced or updated.

Having your car serviced freshly before listing the vehicle for sale also means you know exactly what state the car is in before you sell. This helps to prepare you for any negotiation based on car condition. If possible, ask the mechanic to give you a ballpark figure of value after they have had a look to add to your pricing research.

Small things like an oil change and new windscreen wipers will add more value to your car and demonstrate the vehicle has been well maintained. Ask for these to be done at your final service and see if they recommend any other non-essential, low-cost fixes that might add value to your vehicle. Have a road safety certificate (pink slip) inspection done for peace of mind for buyers.

A service before sale is also a good opportunity to change any tyres that have worn. A secondhand car with new tyres is always going to be more appealing. A tyre alignment and brake pad change may also increase the value of the vehicle if these are needed.

Sell with registration still active

Aim to sell your car well before registration expires. Several months of remaining rego can help to get a buyer over the line as they avoid the added expense of registration on top of the cost of the car.

Things get a bit more complicated for you and the buyer if registration has expired. You will have an easier time negotiating a better price if there are a few months left on rego.

Clean your car

Clean up the car thoroughly before listing for sale or having potential buyers view or drive the car. Steam clean the seats either through a professional car cleaner or hire a steam cleaner yourself from somewhere like Bunnings. Investing in a professional clean will help to elevate the price well beyond the investment you may pay for cleaning.

Replace floor mats if they look tired and a leather wheel cover can elevate a scuffed or tired looking steering wheel.

Take high quality photos

Good photos matter more than most people realise, increasing potential leads. Choose a nice location with some greenery, with a clean and simple backdrop. Shoot in during daylight without shadows falling over the car. Include photos of the front, rear, both sides of the car, wheel, dash, interior, engine bay, odometer and logbook. Turn wheels slightly to show wheel rims. If possible, use a wide-angle lens for a more professional look.

Attract with an appealing ad

The more potential buyers looking at your car the better price you are likely to get. Attract your ideal customer by including details such as key features, honest condition, full service history and reason for sale. Include any recent maintenance and upgrades and list any extras included (such as floor mats, tinting or a roof rack). Be sure to also include details such as fuel economy and safety ratings and the reason for sale. Use simple, clear and confident language to gain trust.

Before meeting with potential buyers, speak on the phone and get some personal details from them such as full name and contact number. Arrange to meet somewhere public, ideally during daylight. Don’t let your insurance lapse until the sale goes through (to cover any accidental damage during a test drive) and don’t let anyone in the seat of your car without sighting (and taking a photo on your phone) of their licence.

Be prepared to negotiate

Expect people to offer less than you are asking. Know the value of your vehicle and be prepared to negotiate a price that suits both parties. Be clear about what your lowest acceptable price is, and if you are in a position to wait for a better price be ok with saying no to a sale.

A well-maintained used car in good condition is a valuable asset. Invest time and effort into preparing your vehicle for sale and you are likely to be rewarded with a quicker sale and a better price. Presentation, transparency and attention to detail make all the difference and will help your car to stand out in a competitive market, giving buyers peace of mind and potentially more money in the bank for you.

Money moves to make when finances feel fraught

We’ve all felt the pinch at the petrol pump and the sting at the supermarket lately. Even Easter eggs seemed to be egg-stremely egg-spensive this year. With interest rates back on the rise alongside escalating international unrest, it’s time to buckle down and get serious about your spending.

It can feel overwhelming to know where to start with such a big issue as spending, so why not get started with some simple strategies and dive into the amazing resource that is the Australian Mutual Bank article archives? You will find many years’ worth of fabulous money saving articles and all kinds of useful tips and tricks woven into the article below.

Release and renew

Simplify spending

How can you simplify your spending this year? Consider only buying what you actually need in 2026. Make considered rather than compulsive purchases and budget for them. Establish a solid savings strategy for the year with a simple budget to follow and allocate a percentage of your income toward either paying off debt or building up savings.

As you go through your expenses take some time to review your accounts and check to see which small and large expenses could be reduced or even eliminated.

It’s time to review all subscriptions and assess which are essential.

Who would have thought snuggling at home under a doona could save you money? Find out how you can keep more money in your pocket over the cooler months of the year. Autumn and Winter might just be the best time of the year to save money.

Consider simplifying your wardrobe altogether and curating a classy and timeless capsule wardrobe to reduce the need for regular wardrobe updates.

This article was written back when petrol peaked at $2.06 per litre back in 2022. Well, pump prices have now peaked well beyond that, but the tips to saving still apply. Read here for some tips on how to be more frugal with your fuel.

Save at the supermarket

Shop seasonal produce, buy in bulk and support small business over the big supermarkets and you will likely save on your weekly shop.

Economise your electricity

Power prices are not going down any time soon and the cooler months can see us turning up the heat which can also increase the cost of our power bill. Keep your bills at bay with these tips on how to save on rising energy costs.

Stop stockpiling stuff

Stop buying more stuff for the kids and rotate their toys instead. Your home will be less chaotic plus you will save money and trips to the mall. Most importantly you will help to teach your kids to value what they already have.

Consider gifting experiences instead of physical items for birthdays and Christmas for loved ones and build lasting memories instead of piles of stuff.

Holidays ’On the House’

Skip the international holiday this year and try housesitting as a way to expand your horizons but keep your spending less adventurous.

Nothing New is nothing spent

October is Buy Nothing New Month, which is a while away, but what if you applied the same principles throughout the year and really worked on limiting your purchasing for the remainder of 2026? It might not come naturally, but it’s certainly possible if you are committed to reducing your spending.

Curb your credit card costs

Let this year be the one that sees you tackle credit card debt for good. Commit to paying off your bills monthly and work to reduce the balance as you implement all the savings tips above.

Give generously

Many families are struggling during these challenging times. If you are able to volunteer your time or donate to charities (even if things are tight at home) not only will you be helping those in need, you will improve your own sense of wellbeing and broaden your perspective on prosperity. Even better if you can introduce concepts of charity to your children and lead by example. It costs nothing to be kind, but the ripple effect is mighty.

Wealth wisdom

Wealth truly is a matter of perspective. Perhaps you are actually better at money than you think….this checklist will help you determine where you are at financially.

Your relationship with money determines your own money story, so perhaps it’s time you wrote a love letter to money and clear the air. A negative attitude toward money could actually be limiting its flow into your life. The good news is it’s not too late to rewrite your money story and shift your mindset to attract more abundance.

The most content people in the world are able to appreciate what they have in their lives already. They can cherish and celebrate their wins no matter how small and can acknowledge the abundance they have access to everyday. They often live simple lives with less stuff and more room for experiencing the joys of everyday life.

True wealth encompasses all that you value. It honours your resources and supports your wellbeing. Being wealthy is something you embody. It’s not actually a bank balance, it’s how you show up in the world. When we expand our perception of wealth into more than just ‘finance’ or ‘money’ but rather a sense of wellbeing and abundance we can more easily tap into this flow and live a fulfilled and enriching life, no matter what is going on in the world around us.

Safer and more sustainable materials

The dream of many is to buy a home and eventually to make it their own. Sometimes this means painting it colours that feel cosy, and decorating and furnishing the space with hand-picked favourites. For others, a house doesn’t feel like a home until they’ve elevated the space with more significant alterations according to their own specific tastes, moving beyond surface level adornments and into remodelling. A home renovation is rarely a cheap or stress free option these days, but it does enable you to truly transform a house into a home complete with the character and style that is unique to you.

With so many options and possibilities to fit all kinds of budgets it is easy to feel overwhelmed around finishes and materials. While there are plenty of cheap options on the market, low-cost finishes may not last, especially in high traffic areas such as kitchens and bathrooms, making them an unsustainable choice. Cheaper materials are also frequently manufactured with low quality components and sometimes include toxic substances.

VOCs (volatile organic compounds) are chemicals that off-gas from many adhesives and paints, and not just while they are curing but sometimes for months or years. VOCs have been linked to health issues such as headaches, dizziness and eye or throat irritation and can aggravate existing conditions such as asthma. SVOC (semi volatile organic compounds are less volatile than VOCs and as a result can linger for longer, existing in household dust and settling on surfaces and in soft furnishings, causing systemic, long-term exposure.

If quality and longevity of a renovation is important to you and you want finishes that will not only last several decades, but that are also toxic free and sustainable, then read on for some innovative solutions.

Engineered stone reimagined

Engineered Stone is often a more practical and affordable option for bench tops over the more traditional, high-end option of marble and stone, but in recent years many well-known products have been withdrawn and banned from the market due to silica related illnesses. Viscostone Eco Surfaces is a patented crystalline silica-free formulation that incorporates natural and recycled materials. It has the strength and clarity of traditional engineered stone and exhibits high hardness, scratch and water resistance. The stone is also manufactured using renewable energy, 100% wastewater and is made from carefully selected eco-friendly recycled raw materials. Viscostone is a material that is solid in its sustainability.

An eggcellent aggregate alternative

If recycling is your thing, you may like to take it to the next level with wall finishes made from recycled egg and oyster shell waste sourced from restaurants. The Circular Sea Collection by Mineral Fox is a range of natural wall renders and plasters which replace virgin aggregates with recycled shell waste, diverting tonnes of shell waste from landfill each month as well as supporting critical oyster reef regeneration. Oysters are vital to waterway health as natural filters and carbon sequesters. Being fully biodegradable the material can be safely recycled or returned to the earth at the end of its lifespan.

Cork has chalked up its status

Cork flooring had its day back in the 70s and 80s but has had a recent resurgence thanks to developments in texture, colour and installation. Gone are the days of glossy, toxic polyurethane coating and orange hues. Today cork has been reimagined to look like marble, timber and even cement thanks to innovations in product development. Not only is it stylish and an affordable flooring alternative, it also happens to be eco-friendly, sustainable and holds amazing insulating properties. Ideally look for a brand that also holds Greenguard Certification such as The Flooring Co or Portugal Cork Co. Look for Fire Certificates, Green Guard Gold Certificates and FSC certified cork. Cork is harvested from the bark of the cork tree, a renewable resource that regenerates naturally.

Meet Marmoleum

Lino floors were first developed in the 1860s as a durable floor surface incorporating oxidized linseed oil, cork dust, and resin. Perhaps it was even your grandma’s kitchen floor. While original lino was made from primarily natural materials over the years it has often been replaced by synthetic and plastic based alternatives which are cheaper to make, yet still may be referred to as lino. To avoid confusion with the plastic substitutes Linoleum, the good old original Lino has reclaimed its clean origins with a new name, Marmoleum a product made by Forbo. Marmoleum is able to be installed without the use of toxic adhesives and is made with up to 98% natural raw materials. A clever flooring solution with vintage vibes for modern times. Certificates by third party certifiers have also confirmed these products have low VOC emissions.

Milk paint

Many popular brands of paint now offer low VOC options. But to skip the VOCs entirely consider splashing some milk paint onto your walls and furniture. It is an entirely natural and chemical free alternative to commercial paint. Made from milk proteins combined with lime and natural pigments milk paint is an antibacterial, breathable, porous and alkaline paint which is naturally mould and mildew resistant. Similar to a lime wash, milk paint is perfect to refresh timber furniture and toys and even walls.

Solid hardwood flooring

Avoid the floating floorboards which often contain toxic adhesives and VOCs and stick with solid timber. Finish with natural oils instead of old school polyurethane and you’ll have a durable, non-toxic, and long-lasting choice. For a sustainable choice source only FSC (Forest Stewardship Council timbers.

Carpets and rugs

Skip the synthetic carpets and seek soft underfoot options that are made from natural fibres such as wool, jute, silk, and cotton. Check for GOTS certification to ensure safety.

Alternatives to traditional adhesives

Many adhesives are laced with toxic chemical substances such as formaldehyde, isocyanates and phthalates that it is worth sourcing materials that won’t compromise your family’s health. Mechanical fixing eliminates the need for adhesives all together. Physically securing components together using fasteners can eliminate the need for adhesives, glue, or chemical bonding agents entirely. This approach is frequently used to ensure structural integrity and is a longer lasting alternative as adhesives are vulnerable to UV, heat or moisture damage. Using fixing methods over adhesives also makes it easier to take apart, repair or reuse components down the track. Avoiding adhesives is also going to result in a smaller carbon footprint because chemical adhesives will impact whether materials can be safely recycled at the end of life.

How can consumers take charge?

Asking for your design and building professionals to provide transparency in the way of safety data sheets and asking them to source products with trusted certifications in turn puts pressure on manufacturers to step up and offer healthier, lower emission products due to demand.

Ask for mechanical fixings where possible, and where adhesives are essential then ask for low VOC and low SVOC options with reliable third-party certifications to demonstrate safety. Seek out innovative materials that are made from renewable materials with a commitment to low VOC. The more consumers ask for these, the more demand from industry, in turn improving the supply and demand and therefore cost over time for materials that are safer for humans and the environment.

Certifications to look for:

GREENGUARD Gold: UL GREENGUARD Certification identifies products with low chemical emissions, It tests furniture, flooring, andmaterials for over 360 volatile organic compounds (VOCs). GREENGUARD Gold is the top-of-the-line standard for sensitive environments like schools and healthcare, ensuring safer, healthier indoor air.

FSC (Forest Stewardship Council): FSC ensures wood and wood products are sustainably sourced.

GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard): GOTS Ensures textiles are organic and processed safely.

Declare Label: Kind of like a nutrition label for products, this colour coded system flags any chemicals of concern, providing transparency on ingredients, helping avoid toxic chemicals.

The Building Challenge Red List: This evolving resource flags the ‘worse in class’ substances widely used in the building industry that pose serious risks to human health and the environment. The list helps design and building professionals achieve highly sustainable, healthy building certifications.

The WELL Building Standard: WELL focuses on the human experience, with its Materials Concept, specifically V2 dedicated to helping to minimise human exposure to hazardous building materials. The WELL standard helps developers and organisations to achieve more thoughtful and intentional spaces that enhance human health and well-being.

Alongside industry standards that are raising the bar, a whole new world of sustainable building materials now exists that will not only elevate your home but also make it safer for your family. Ideally you want to be sourcing materials that are non-toxic, resilient, recyclable, made from renewable materials and designed to last. Ultimately, a home renovation can be a long-term investment if you choose your finishes, materials and professionals with care.

Animal encounters of the ethical kind

School holidays are best spent when families can enjoy quality time together. Sometimes this means vegging out on the couch and watching movies in your PJs. Other times it means heading off for a day trip or a few nights away to explore and form some delightful core memories.

A popular activity to undertake during school holidays, certainly while the kids are still young, is to visit an animal sanctuary, zoo or aquarium. Not only can these be a fun filled day out, they are also educational with keeper talks, entertaining shows, up-close animal interactions and information on flyers and posters for visitors to learn more about the inhabitants. Something about watching animals and their unique expressions, quirky habits and cute faces is appealing to all ages and is guaranteed to be a highlight of the holiday period.

It’s important to appreciate however, not all animal interaction experiences are equal. When looking for an aquarium or wildlife park to visit during your holidays, first check to confirm they are a member of the Zoo and Aquarium Association. To be accredited with the ZAA ensures the animal park is held to the highest standards of animal welfare. The ZAA is a peak body representing the collective voice of the zoos, aquariums, sanctuaries and wildlife parks across Australia, Aotearoa New Zealand and Papua New Guinea that achieve excellence in animal care.

Highlighting their “progressive, science-based” approach to animal welfare, ZAA uses the Five Domains Model, an approach which prioritises welfare from the animals’ perspective.

Animal welfare is not the sole focus of the ZAA however, with over 100 breeding programs underway by members in support of conservation and community education. Breeding programs are integral to threatened species conservation and recovery. According to the ZAA website, their members attract on average 22 million domestic and international visitors per year, connecting them with nature, educating over a million students about wildlife and contributing funds, expertise and efforts to conservation programs. They also raised over $20million in funding for conservation programs.

Before you book your next day out with the kids ensure your chosen zoo or aquarium are on this this list.

Here are a couple of examples of some of the more well-known animal attractions. Not only are these organisations ZAA members, they are also leading the way in animal welfare and conservation efforts.

Taronga Zoo: operates as a not-for-profit conservation organisation (Taronga Conservation Society Australia) and directs revenue from ticket sales towards supporting its wildlife conservation, animal care, science, research and education work. It has also recently acquired thousands of acres of land in northern NSW to restore endangered woodland habitat to create new refuges for threatened species such as koalas.

Symbio Wildlife Park: contributes to conservation via its Symbio Conservation Foundation which grows and cultivates koala habitat and eucalyptus feed tree plantation programs with local councils and organisations to support koalas and native wildlife, building more resilient ecosystems and providing sustainable food sources for animals in care.

SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium: prioritises conservation and the protection of marine life through its global SEA LIFE Trust which focuses on marine conservation, rescue and rehabilitation along with habitat protection and breeding programs for threatened species. Education about ocean health and the impact of plastic pollution are woven through the exhibits and shows.

Beyond these examples, Zoo and Aquarium Association members are found across Australia, each with a distinct mission and legacy, contributing in their own unique ways towards conservation, education and species protection. While those ticket prices may pinch at the box office, you’re not just paying for a fun day out for the kids, you’re also helping to fund species survival and wildlife welfare. A worthy cause indeed.

Personal loan scam warning issued to borrowers

Consumers are being warned about a growing wave of personal loan scams, where fraudsters pose as brokers and financial service providers to target unsuspecting borrowers.

How does this scam work

According to Scamwatch, these Personal loan scams typically begin when fraudsters pose as legitimate lenders or brokers, promoting attractive loan offers through fake websites, social media ads, or direct contact. After a victim submits an application, the scammer will get in contact via email or social media.

The victim is then asked to provide sensitive personal information and documents including photo ID, payslips, bank statements, and login details for bank and myGov accounts, which can later be used for identity theft.

Scammers often send official looking loan contracts and may even impersonate existing Australian credit licence and financial service licence holders. They may even fraudulently quote ABN registration and credit licence information from ASIC to appear genuine.

Before any funds are released, the victim is told to pay an upfront fee, often described as insurance or establishment fees, with false assurances that this payment will be refunded after three months. Once the payment is made, the scammer disappears, no loan is ever provided, and the victim is left both financially and personally exposed.

Who is most at risk

Anyone searching for a loan provider may encounter these scams. People experiencing financial hardship are also considered particularly vulnerable, as they may be more likely to seek urgent financial assistance and respond to seemingly attractive loan offers.

What to look out for

Scamwatch has outlined several warning signs:

Communications that ask for your personal details and identification documents.

Requests for upfront insurance payments that must be paid before loan funds are released.

Requests to pay funds to a personal bank account.

The loan provider is not licensed and does not appear on ASIC’s professional registers.

The loan provider appears on ASIC’s investor alert list.

Pressure to make payments and to pay in a particular way.

Claims that insurance premium payments will be refunded after three months.

How to protect yourself

Remember to Stop, Check, Protect.

Stop - Scammers create a sense of urgency. Don’t rush to make decisions about money or about sharing personal details. Don’t let anyone pressure you into immediate action. Trust your instincts if something feels wrong.

Check - Always verify who you’re really dealing with before taking any action. Check the organisation is licensed by searching ASIC’s professional registers. Even if the organisation is licensed with ASIC and you’ve been given ASIC company registration and licence details, check the contact by calling the organisation using a number you source yourself. Visit the Moneysmart website to check ASIC’s investor alert list. Before sending any money, check that the account name matches who you intend to send it to.

Protect - If you’ve given money or personal information to someone you suspect is a scammer, act quickly. Find out more below.

What to do if you’ve been scammed

The sooner you take action, the better you can protect yourself and others from scammers.

If you believe you may have been a victim or lost money to a scam, it’s important to notify your financial institution as soon as possible.

Australian Mutual Bank members can speak to our Fraud Team by calling 13 61 91 (Monday to Friday 8:00am - 7:00pm, Saturday 8:30am - 11:30am, Sydney time) or by emailing info@australianmutual.bank.

Change passwords/passphrases and security details if you think they’ve been compromised.

Monitor your bank statements and credit reports for unusual activity.

Seek support from IDCARE (a free government-funded service) who can help you develop a response plan to limit the damage. IDCARE will never contact you out of the blue.

Help others and keep authorities in the know by reporting the scam to Scamwatch. You should also report the scam to the platform where the scam is happening (where applicable).

Beware of follow up scams, particularly ones promising to help you get your money back. One in three victims of a scam have been scammed more than once according to Scamwatch.

If you or someone you know has been impacted and may need ongoing help, there are support services available. These avenues of support are available to help, listen and believe.

Restoring nature: the Australian Mutual Bank forest at Three Cedars

With the help of our members, we’re thrilled to share that our Greenfleet campaign has successfully reached its goal! Launched last year, the campaign aimed to plant one native tree for every new member who joined Australian Mutual Bank.

Thanks to the support of our members, 720 native trees have been planted in the Australian Mutual Bank forest, at Three Cedars, on Bundjalung Country, west of Nimbin in the Northern Rivers region of NSW. This vital revegetation project will help restore an ecosystem rich in biodiversity and cultural significance.

Over 80 locally native species have been planted, including the native Bangalow palm (Archontophoenix cunninghamii) and the endangered small-leaved tamarind (Dipoglottis campbellii), a rainforest tree endemic to the region now threatened due to land clearing.

By restoring this site, the Australian Mutual Bank forest is helping to:

Provide habitat for endangered and vulnerable fauna such as koalas and grey-headed flying foxes, with giant barred frogs and rose-crowned fruit doves also known to inhabit the region.

Enhance riparian areas to support species like platypuses and native fish.

Rebuild an ecosystem that stores carbon, protects waterways, and safeguards threatened species.

This campaign reflects Australian Mutual Bank’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility.

The initiative helps combat climate change, improves air quality, and enhances landscapes that benefit both people and wildlife. Every tree planted supports ecosystems, helps prevent soil erosion, and strengthens the resilience of our natural environment.

We thank our members for their enthusiasm and support throughout this campaign. Their involvement ensures that together we can continue to invest in initiatives that benefit our communities and the planet.

While this campaign has now concluded, our dedication to sustainability continues. We look forward to sharing future opportunities where our members can help us make an even greater positive impact

Members vote in favour of merger proposal

Australian Mutual Bank Ltd and Teachers Mutual Bank Limited will merge to create one of Australia’s largest mutual banks following successful member approval at the Special General Meetings of both banks.

Members of both mutual banks voted strongly in favour of the merger, and well above the required 75% approval rate, clearing the path for final regulatory approval ahead of bringing the two banks together as a merged organisation on 1 May 2026.

The merged bank will operate as Teachers Mutual Bank Limited with $14.2 billion* in total assets, ~280,000 members and more than 750 employees.

Members will benefit from 130 years of combined operating history and increased investment into customer service, competitive financial products, digital banking, and scam and fraud prevention.

The merged bank will be Chaired by Andrew Kearnan, Teachers Mutual Bank Limited’s current Chair. Anthony Hughes, Teachers Mutual Bank Limited’s CEO, will be the merged bank’s CEO.

Andrew Kearnan said the strong member vote was an endorsement of our shared vision to bring the two like-minded banks together to create an even stronger bank.

“Our strategic intent is to create an even stronger, more resilient, future-ready bank that’s 100% owned by its members – and it's fantastic to see such strong support across our membership as we take this important step forward. Combining our two trusted and financially strong banks means we can deliver more for our members over the long term while bringing banking for good to more Australians.”

Australian Mutual Bank members vote in favour of proposed merger

Members of Australian Mutual Bank have voted overwhelmingly in favour of the proposed merger with Teachers Mutual Bank Limited (TMBL), with 93.8% of votes cast supporting the proposal.

The strong result reflects members’ support for bringing the two member-owned banks together to create a stronger mutual banking organisation focused on delivering long-term value for members.

The outcome of Teachers Mutual Bank Limited member vote will be announced tomorrow (12 March 2026). If it is also successful, the merger is expected to take effect on 1 May 2026, subject to final regulatory approvals.

Australian Mutual Bank Board Chair, Fiona Bennett, said the result demonstrated members’ confidence in the future direction of the bank.

“This overwhelming support from our members reflects the trust they place in the Board and management to act in their long-term interests. The proposed merger represents an important step in strengthening our mutual bank so we can continue delivering value and service to members well into the future.”

Australian Mutual Bank CEO, Mark Worthington, thanked members for their engagement throughout the process.

“We appreciate the engagement from members and their participation in this important decision. This outcome supports the creation of a stronger, sustainable mutual bank that will continue to put members first.”

Mr Worthington said the merger would bring together two well-established mutual banks that share a strong commitment to member ownership, community and long-term financial sustainability.

“By joining forces with Teachers Mutual Bank Limited, we will be better positioned to invest in technology, products and services that support our members’ evolving needs, while continuing to operate as a member-owned mutual bank.”

Should Teachers Mutual Bank members also approve the merger tomorrow, Australian Mutual Bank members will automatically become members of Teachers Mutual Bank Limited from the effective date of the transfer, with the Australian Mutual Bank brand being retained.

We thank our members for taking the time to participate in this important vote and for their ongoing support of Australian Mutual Bank. Further updates will be shared with members as the merger process progresses.

The NSW Pattern Book: A fast-tracked path to medium-density development

As land prices surge and the housing crisis continues, many owner-builders and developers are looking to maximise a single block with medium density builds instead of single dwellings. At a time where there is an intense focus and demand for housing, finding a light filled, well ventilated, efficiently planned and beautifully designed home isn’t always easy. However, with the NSW Pattern Book you can now build your own thanks to cost-effective designs and a fast-tracked approvals process.

A Government response

Conscious of the complexities surrounding obtaining development approval during a time when housing is at an all-time low, the NSW Government Architect and the NSW Government launched an initiative in July 2025 to accelerate the construction of high quality, sustainable and affordable low and mid-rise homes. The NSW Pattern Book is aimed at improving quality and speeding up supply for terraces, townhouses, and duplexes. This pathway offers eligible projects access to award winning architect designs and a fast-tracked approvals process and aims to address housing shortages and affordability.

What exactly is the NSW Pattern Book?

The NSW Pattern Book provides pre-approved, architect-designed templates for terraces, townhouses and three to six storey apartments, simplifying key steps in the building process. The diverse selection of Government Architect NSW endorsed designs will fast-track the approval process, with approval times as short as 10–20 days. The designs cover a range of housing configurations by award winning architects selected via an industry wide international design competition.

The NSW Pattern book is primarily designed to facilitate the development of a single building on a single block of land however single dwelling designs are not included. If you are in the market to develop a townhouse, duplex or mid-rise apartment block developments the NSW Pattern Book may be the most cost effective and time efficient pathway, offering a stylish and sustainable middle ground between project homes and custom designed architect builds.

Since launching in July last year, and as of January 2026 there have been more than 21,000 pattern designs purchased from the NSW Pattern Book, with many projects already approved for construction.

Who is it for?

The NSW Pattern Book is perfect for anyone overwhelmed by the approvals and application stage of a housing development as it provides access to ready-made design templates by award winning designers. The designs will suit a range of investors from established developers and volume building companies to community housing providers. The designs also provide opportunities for existing homeowners, multi-generational families, or friends and business partners co-investing and wanting to maximise living area on a single block.

Pre-approved designs mean fast tracked assessments

The Pattern book provides a streamlined, pre-approved design process resulting in a reduced assessment timeframe, with the opportunity to be approved in just 10 days. If you are wanting to realise a project quickly, this pathway will fast track the approvals process due to the greater certainty provided by using pre-approved pattern designs.

From an authority’s approvals and plannings perspective, the NSW Pattern Book (limited to NSW) allows you to obtain approval via the faster Complying Development Certificate (CDC) pathway (combining planning and construction approval) without needing a traditional, longer Development Application (DA).

Costs to consider

While the $1,000 per design is a fraction of the (up to) $20,000+ cost of typical custom architectural fees for a similar development, there are additional costs to consider before projects can be realised. All designs must still go through the process of having the necessary consultants to meet the requirements for Complying Development (CDC). Required consultants may include a structural engineer, hydraulic or civil engineer for stormwater design, a landscape architect/designer, and a building surveyor to approve the CDC and act as the Principal Certifying Authority (PCA) during construction, inspecting the works at critical stages such as waterproofing.

Despite having a pre-determined design, you will still need to work with a design professional to finalise the drawings specific for your site in order to bring the vision to life. An architect or building designer will assist you to realise any of the low-rise pattern projects and for mid-rise pattern projects you will need to work with an architect. These professionals will also support you by providing advice and preparing necessary documentation for your project.

Choosing and modifying a design

NSW Pattern Book designs can be browsed and purchased via the NSW Government Planning website.

You can adapt your chosen design to your site and preferences with the assistance of your chosen design professional. Each ‘pattern’ includes a base design with multiple variants meaning they can be changed (within pre-determined options) to adjust the design to suit the site and accommodate variables such as climate and orientation with options to improve solar access. There are limitations to the extent of modification in order to retain the pre-approval benefits. If taken too far, changes would render the licence null and void and therefore remove the opportunity to use the pattern or design again. There are clear modification guidelines that need to be adhered to. Modification guidelines are generally limited to adapting to site specific conditions rather than allowing for any significant layout adjustments.

Design quality and sustainability

From a sustainability standpoint, all building designs in the NSW Pattern Book are energy efficient and material sensitive resulting in housing that is light filled, cross ventilated and all-electric to reduce energy bills and improve thermal comfort. Patterns are compact and designed to be cost-effective and use standard construction systems familiar to builders.

Improved certainty elevates confidence

When a design and its planning pathway are predictable, costs can be more easily estimated upfront. This can assist lenders to assess project risk as well as funding requirements and may simplify the process of securing finance for Pattern Book projects enabling more homes to be built across NSW quickly and affordably.

If you would like to explore the NSW Pattern Book as a means to fast track a housing development and would to speak to a lender about securing a loan, Australian Mutual Bank has a range of flexible loans with competitive fixed and variable loan options, as well as a team of dedicated loans specialists with whom you can discuss your needs.

Shop small to reduce waste and keep costs down

A few changes in your weekly shopping habits can help reduce food and packaging waste, improve human connection, increase competition, and even save you money.

Our shopping habits play a big role in supply and demand, our plastics consumption, and the kind of world we collectively create.

Shopping at farmers markets will likely induce the quintessential imagery of a woman with a woven basket over her shoulder as she carefully inspects fresh produce before making a selection, children licking ice cream as it dribbles down a cone, the smell of freshly brewed coffee and local honey producers selling their liquid gold. The jarring sound of shopping trolleys crashing against a supermarket aisle is replaced by the appealing hum of human interaction and perhaps some children playing in the distance. Under the shady canopy of trees or canvas marquees, the high-pitched pulse of fluorescent overhead lights is absent. Instead, the sun warms your skin and greenery lines the edges of the space rather than concrete walls.

For the sake of convenience, however, we more often find ourselves shopping at supermarkets. Often multiple times a week. We shake our heads at the cost when it’s all summed up and trundle off home in disbelief. Only to do it again a few short days later. And have you noticed it’s almost impossible to have a personal interaction at check-out these days? We are nudged toward self-checkout, face to face with yet another screen, no longer able to have an exchange with another human being. The automated voice on repeat ‘please take your shopping’ as you try to cram it all back into your reusable bags with not a single pleasantry exchanged.

In a world that is steadily edging away from in-person, human, messy, raw and organic, we must remember what is important. Keeping small business alive, supporting bricks and mortar shops, buying direct from producers and growers, these are all essential ways to hold on to our food sovereignty, human connection, and a healthy local and diverse economy. Do it all with extra attention to detail and you’ll easily reduce your plastic consumption too.

When we scoop fruit and veggies into our baskets at the markets, we reduce the pre-packaged shrink wrap that comes hand in hand with a supermarket purchase. When we buy from local producers, we can buy exactly how much we need (rather than buying pre-packaged, pre-determined quantities) which helps to not only eliminate food waste, but it also gives us fresher produce.

Supporting local businesses can also often mean you are buying food that has travelled a shorter distance than produce found at Supermarkets. Fewer food miles means less packaging, fewer preservatives, and fresher food on your table too. Smaller batch producers will often specialise in seasonal produce in smaller quantities to maintain freshness. Over time you can develop relationships and connections with the face behind a business. Dealing directly with the owner of small business or a local producer gives you the opportunity to ask questions about farming practises and find out more about the food you are consuming.

Supporting small business and farmers directly is an essential step in keeping competition healthy, produce prices accessible and food security strong. If we stop supporting farmers, they will have no choice but to sell to wholesalers and supermarkets at much lower prices. An unsustainable long-term business model for most, many smaller producers eventually go out of business or have to cut costs to maintain profits.

In the farming sector, cost cutting often looks like increased pesticide usage and intensive agriculture. Over time, this erodes soil health, reduces pollinators, and impacts biodiversity and the resilience of local food systems. The end result? Less nutritious food, less competition, and higher prices, ultimately undermining long term food security for us all. Food sovereignty is critical for biodiversity, a healthy economy and access to heirloom and more unusual cultivars of food and other plant species.

As we move into a new year, consider how you will shop in 2026 and whether you can support local businesses. Keeping profits in the pockets of local producers does more than you might realise. It keeps competition and variety alive and well, helping to ensure prices remain fair and choice stays accessible to all.

Why AI trends could be risky for your online safety

Are Artificial Intelligence (AI) trends putting you at risk?

AI-generated caricatures and profile images are everywhere right now. From social media feeds to trending apps. They’re fun, creative, and can make your online presence stand out. But before you jump on the trend, it’s important to consider the potential risks, especially from a banking and security perspective.

Your face is more than just a selfie

Biometric technology, like Face ID, is increasingly used to secure smartphones, banking apps, and other sensitive accounts. Unlike a password, your face is permanent so if your biometric data is ever compromised, you can’t simply change it.

When you upload clear photos of your face to AI apps, you may inadvertently be sharing highly detailed biometric information. Even if the platform promises privacy, there’s always a risk that data could be stored, misused, or exposed in a breach.

Why this matters for online banking

For many Australians, smartphones are the gateway to their money. Face ID or other facial recognition methods are convenient for accessing banking apps quickly, but they also make your face a key to your accounts. Sharing high-quality images of your face online could increase the risk of identity theft or fraud.

Data breaches can have serious consequences. Unlike passwords, biometric information can’t be “reset.” Once it’s out there, it’s out there.

How to stay safe while still enjoying trends

You don’t have to avoid AI altogether, just be cautious. Here are some tips to help you stay safe when using AI apps:

Be selective about uploading images: avoid sharing front-facing selfies with unknown or untrusted AI apps.

Check privacy policies: review how the platform stores, uses, and protects uploaded images.

Use security settings: keep your device and banking apps updated and consider additional verification methods like multi-factor authentication.

Think before you share: a fun trend today could become a security risk tomorrow.

Protect your identity like you protect your money

Trends come and go, but your identity is permanent. Taking a moment to think about how and where you share images of your face can help protect you from unnecessary risks. By being mindful, you can enjoy online creativity without compromising your personal security.

Members join merger Q&A sessions in Parramatta and Bankstown

Yesterday, members joined Australian Mutual Bank leadership for in-person Q&A sessions at our Parramatta and Bankstown branches to learn more about the proposed merger with Teachers Mutual Bank Limited.

The sessions were led by CEO Mark Worthington and Board Chair Fiona Bennett, who shared details about the proposed merger and what it could mean for members, before opening the floor for questions and discussion.

Members were keen to understand the economies of scale expected to be achieved through the merger, including how a larger combined organisation could support long-term sustainability and value for members. Questions were also raised about board composition in the merged bank, interest rates, and how members can vote on the proposal.

Members were pleased to hear that the Australian Mutual Bank brand will be retained and that there will be no forced redundancies as a result of the merger. This was particularly welcomed by members, who expressed reassurance around continuity and staff stability.

The sessions provided an opportunity for open and transparent dialogue, allowing members to hear directly from the leadership team and seek clarity on the topics most important to them.

Members are encouraged to visit the Merger Hub on our website for more information. If you haven’t already, please remember to cast your vote to have your say on the proposed merger. Online voting closes at the Special General Meeting (SGM) on 11 March 2026.

How to do less and achieve more this year

As a new year unfolds, it is the perfect time to reflect on the previous year and consider your goals for the year ahead. But before you try to do all-of-the-things-all-at-once, why not ease into the year with mindful awareness and a gentler approach.

So often we focus on all the things we want to do, buy or achieve. We must also consider what might be timely to let go of, stop or reduce. Perhaps rather than creating a giant list of ‘things to do and achieve’ what if you did less this year?

Here are some slightly pared back suggestions for the year ahead that might have you approaching your goals in a different way but yielding greater results as you focus on meaningful shifts that might actually stick.

The 80/20 rule

Look at implementing the 80/20 rule in your work and life. This concept otherwise known as the Pareto Principle suggests that approximately 20% of actions produce 80% of results. The idea is to focus on high impact tasks and where possible, eliminate, delegate, or outsource the rest (or leave as optional extras when time permits). Ask yourself what smaller, less relevant tasks can you eliminate from your days so you can be more efficient and productive? Ultimately the 80/20 principle is about spending more of your time on tasks which ‘move the needle’ in your business, work, and or home life and not getting distracted wasting time doing the rest.

It’s important to note the 80/20 concept is a guideline. Ratios will of course vary depending on your unique situation, but the principle still stands. For a deep dive in how to focus without distraction on cognitively demanding tasks (i.e. the top 20%), check out the book Deep Work by Cal Newport.

Stop chasing start living

Instead of the all-of-the-trimmings international holiday you think you need, why not halve your budget and explore the vast landscapes in your own backyard. Reconnect with your homeland and save some pennies with a trip within Australia. Less stress and lower spending may result in a more relaxing holiday.

Rather than chasing that big promotion this year, consider cultivating stronger connections with your colleagues and management staff and focus on building systems and efficiency that allows you to generate an enjoyable, fulfilling and rewarding work life. This approach to your work will naturally attract opportunities your way without you having to chase them.

A low effort and highly effective way to save money is to avoid unnecessary upgrades. Skip the big car upgrade or new phone and upgrade your savings instead. Work toward reducing debt with more mindful spending and do not replace items until they stop working. Set up a devoted savings account and direct money you would have otherwise spent on upgrades into building wealth instead. A high interest rate savings account with deposits in the way of scheduled direct debits is one of the easiest ways to save.

Rather than worry about hitting a set weight on the scales, find a friend to commit to regular walks together and enjoy moving your body and socialising instead. Focusing on your mental wellbeing and scheduled movement over losing kgs allows a gentle perspective shift which supports a more positive outlook and outcome.

In place of tasking yourself with bold yearly goals, set yourself smaller, more achievable monthly goals. Try creating both a personal and a financial goal each month to work toward. Choose a word for the year as your guide to keep you on track. Consider words such as peace, calm, fun or adventure as suggestions to invite a new way of approaching each day.

Replace your ‘to do’ list with things you are ‘no longer going to do.’ Ideas include no longer checking emails or replying to text messages after hours, learning to say no to social invitations or other commitments if they do not actually excite you, and replacing unhealthy habits with enjoyable self-care.

Digital detox

If you really want to stretch time and get more done in less time this year, skip the screens and implement a digital detox. If you are looking for some inspiration, try reading Digital Minimalism by Cal Newport for a fresh perspective on screen time and social media. Consider spending less time on social media and more time IRL (in real life) with people. Join a book club or some other hobby or interests' group that meets up in person regularly.

Ritualise rest

Schedule rest into your calendar and days so it actually happens. Better to give yourself permission to pause rather than battle with burn out because you didn’t.

Embrace white space

Schedule white space into each day to allow for breaks between commitments as well as allowing for things to take longer than expected, giving you the flexibility to fit in unscheduled appointments or anything unplanned. White space also helps you to achieve peak performance (as you are working in shorter bursts rather than all day with no break), enhancing productivity as well as helping you to avoid overwhelm by cramming too much into one day. Back-to-back meetings can be avoided when we schedule pockets of unscheduled time. White space also gives you space for reflection and strategic thinking as well as down time for creativity and innovation. To explore this concept more, check out this podcast episode by Dr Janel Anderson.

Generate an attitude of gratitude

This year, choose to turn your focus inward a little more. Reflect on what you already have before seeking something else. Can you weave into your days a simple gratitude practice, such as journalling, practising mindfulness, or making a conscious effort to acknowledge and appreciate the people in your life? When we appreciate what we have, we instantly elevate our mood, our relationships, and even our potential opportunities.

While we’ve all been sold the idea that working hard and playing hard is the best way forward, you may find you get even more out of working smarter, living with less and appreciating the little things.

Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan launch

Australian Mutual Bank was proud to have launched its Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) at a special celebratory event held on 21 January 2026.

The launch marked an important milestone in our ongoing reconciliation journey and reaffirmed our commitment to strengthening relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, while continuing to build cultural understanding across our organisation.

Our Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) represents the next step in Australian Mutual Bank’s reconciliation journey. It reflects our recognition of the importance of building respectful, ongoing relationships with First Nations communities and reinforces our broader commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. Through this Innovate RAP, we aim to deepen our understanding of reconciliation and drive meaningful change that strengthens relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and with the organisations and communities that that supports them.

Pictured left to right: Deputy Chair of the Board Alex Claassens, Metropolitan Local Aboriginal Land Council Representative Brendan Kerin, and CEO Mark Worthington

The launch brought together Australian Mutual Bank staff, honoured guests and community representatives in a spirit of respect and celebration. We were privileged to be joined by representatives from across the mutual and community sector, including Customer Owned Banking Association (COBA), Public Service Association (PSA), United Services Union (USU), Spirit Group, Teachers Mutual Bank and the Australian Mutuals Foundation - reflecting the shared commitment across our sector to reconciliation, community and inclusion.

The day was opened by Brendan Kerin, Cultural Educator and Advisor with the Metropolitan Local Aboriginal Land Council, who welcomed attendees to the land of Gadigal people and performed a yidaki (didgeridoo) during the Welcome to Country – a powerful and grounding moment that set the tone for the day.

Pictured: Brendan Kerin performs on a yidaki (didgeridoo) during the Welcome to Country

We were honoured to welcome representatives from Barnardos Australia and Baabayn Aboriginal Council, who collaborated with us throughout the implementation of our previousReflect RAP. We were also pleased to welcome artist Joanne Cassady, a valued Australian Mutual Bank member of more than 30 years, who painted our bespoke RAP artwork. The artwork was on show at the launch event and stands as a permanent symbol of our commitment, displayed at our Surry Hills head office.

Pictured: Australian Mutual Bank staff having a yarn with guests.

Australian Mutual Bank CEO, Mark Worthington, addressed attendees and highlighted the importance of continued commitment to reconciliation: “We’re proud of what we’ve achieved as an organisation. Reaching the Innovate RAP stage represents the next level in our journey. To deepen our understanding, expand interactions and continue to move forward together. This process has been an enjoyable, informative and educational experience.”

Deputy Chair of the Board, Alex Claassens, echoed these sentiments and spoke to the importance of conversation and connection in reconciliation: “It’s a privilege to celebrate the launch of our Innovate RAP. Being part of and giving back to the community is important to us. I encourage people to have conversations - to have a yarn. Those one-on-one discussions help build understanding, respect and connection.”

Australian Mutual Bank’s Innovate RAP reflects our ongoing commitment to walking alongside local communities in the journey toward reconciliation. We are deeply grateful to everyone who joined us to mark this important milestone in our history.

Our Reconciliation Action Plan is central to Australian Mutual Bank’s growth as an organisation committed to contributing to a just and equitable Australia. We thank Reconciliation Australia for their guidance and support in shaping our Innovate RAP, and we look forward to continuing this journey together with humility, purpose and care.

In July 2025, we proudly committed to planting one native tree for every new member who joins Australian Mutual Bank.

Thanks to the incredible support of our community, this initiative has already translated into 500 new native trees planted for our new members, creating a living legacy that will be cared for and protected for decades to come.

To date, 720 trees have already been committed through Greenfleet and we are on track to meet our goal by the end of January 2026.

To celebrate this milestone, a beautiful, sustainably sourced wooden sign has been installed at the Australian Mutual Bank forest, acknowledging our members’ contribution:

“On behalf of our members, Australian Mutual Bank is growing a living legacy with 720 native trees here.”

Where are the trees being planted?

The trees are being planted at Three Cedars, on Bundjalung Country, west of Nimbin in the Northern Rivers region of NSW. This vital revegetation project will help restore an ecosystem rich in biodiversity, cultural significance, and environmental resilience.

Over 80 locally native species have been planted, including native Bangalow palm (Archontophoenix cunninghamii) and the endangered small-leaved tamarind (Dipoglottis campbellii), a rainforest tree endemic to the region which is now threatened due to land clearing.

By restoring this site, we’re helping to:

Provide habitat for endangered and vulnerable fauna such as koalas and grey-headed flying foxes. Giant barred frogs and rose-crowned fruit doves are also known to this region.

Enhance riparian areas to support species like platypuses and native fish.

Rebuild an ecosystem that stores carbon, protects waterways, and safeguards threatened species.

How you can help grow the Australian Mutual Bank forest

Already a member? You can still make a difference. Every time you refer a friend, family member, or colleague to join Australian Mutual Bank, another tree is planted. Together, we can grow the forest faster and achieve something extraordinary: a greener, healthier future for generations to come.

A message from the CEO

The mutual banking industry is undergoing rapid transformation. Member-owned banks across Australia are facing shared challenges driven by increasing regulatory requirements and costs, rapid technological change, cybersecurity risks, and the need to achieve greater economies of scale. At the same time, consolidation across the sector has intensified over the past two decades. While our bank has shown strong resilience throughout this period, we must continue evolving to ensure we deliver the best possible value, protection and service to our members.

With this in mind, the Australian Mutual Bank board of directors has endorsed a merger with Teachers Mutual Bank. Both Australian Mutual Bank and Teachers Mutual Bank are financially sound, well-managed institutions with deeply aligned values and a long-standing commitment to supporting members, communities and essential service professions. Teachers Mutual Bank was carefully selected as our preferred partner based on its financial strength, cultural alignment, strong reputation and shared member-first focus.

The proposed merger is a proactive and strategic choice, designed to safeguard our heritage and ensure that Australian Mutual Bank brand will be retained, operating as profit-for-purpose and remaining 100% member owned. It represents a long-term opportunity that aligns directly with our members’ interests and supports our ability to continue delivering responsible, community-driven banking.

The increased scale of the merged bank will enable us to enhance the quality, convenience and value of our products and services. Importantly, members will gain access to thirteen branches across the ACT, New South Wales, Victoria and Western Australia - maintaining Australian Mutual Bank’s existing six branches and combining them with Teachers Mutual Bank Limited’s seven branches.

Our service will continue to improve. With a larger contact centre team (all based in Australia) - including extended support hours via a Perth-based team - we will be able to provide faster, more responsive assistance while maintaining the friendly, personalised service you know and trust.

As a larger organisation, we will also be able to offer even more opportunities for our people to grow and build fulfilling careers. We have made a clear commitment that there will be no forced redundancies as a result of the merger, with all jobs remaining in Australia. Importantly, the merged bank will continue to operate as a profit-for-purpose organisation and retain our B Corp Certification.

As a merged bank, we will also be better positioned to invest in modern technology, enhance cybersecurity, expand our digital capabilities, and provide lasting benefits to members, including a wider selection of competitive financial products and services, along with potential savings from reduced fees and other charges.

Coming together will create a stronger, more resilient bank - one that remains a challenger in the Australian market while staying small enough to maintain our personal touch.

Members will be asked to vote on the merger proposal at a Special General Meeting (SGM) in March 2026. As we get closer to that time, further information about the merger will be provided to help you make an informed decision, along with practical "How to vote" information.

The Australian Mutual Bank Board unanimously recommends that you vote in favour of the merger resolution at the March 2026 Special General Meeting. I encourage every member to have their say.

Mark Worthington
CEO, Australian Mutual Bank

Frequently Asked Questions about the merger

What will be the corporate name of the merged entity?

The corporate name will be Teachers Mutual Bank Limited; however, the Australian Mutual Bank brand will be retained upon merging.

What will happen to the existing bank brands?

While the Merged Bank’s legal name will be Teachers Mutual Bank Limited, the Australian Mutual Bank brand will operate alongside the Teachers Mutual Bank Limited’s brands (Teachers Mutual Bank, Health Professionals Bank, Firefighters Mutual Bank and UniBank).

What if the member vote fails to support the Merger?

The Australian Mutual Bank Board has a responsibility to ensure the long-term sustainability, viability, and success of our bank, and believes that a Merger is the best way to achieve this. If the vote to merge with Teachers Mutual Bank is unsuccessful, we will continue to pursue a merger as a strategic priority.

Will the Merger affect the member ownership structure?

No, the Merged Bank will continue to be 100% member-owned.

Will my account details change?

Some members may have a change to their member number and account details as we integrate the banks post-Merger. We’re committed to minimising any possible impact.

Will my interest rates change as a result of the merger?

Your interest rates won’t change as a result of the Merger. Just as we operate today, from time to time, there may be changes to interest rates on products. If this occurs, you’ll be notified of such changes in accordance with the terms and conditions applicable to the relevant product or service.

Will there be branch closures?

There will be no branch closures as a direct result of the merger. Post-merger, branch locations from both banks will be available to all members, so you’ll have access to an increased branch network of 13 branch locations, up from six branches today.

Will I still be able to withdraw cash from ATMs?

Yes, just as you do today, you’ll be able to withdraw cash from ATMs.

Will I still be able to access Bank@Post?

Yes, just as you can today, you will be able to conduct your banking using Bank@Post services.

What will happen to my membership?

You will cease to be a member of Australian Mutual Bank and automatically become a member of the Merged Bank.

Will employees keep their jobs?

There will be no forced redundancies as a result of the Merger. As a Merged Bank, we will bring our 750 employees together to inspire excellence and support personal and professional growth. As a larger, stronger bank, we’ll offer broader opportunities for our people to grow and build fulfilling careers.

What does it mean for community activities?

The Merged Bank is committed to continuing to support Australian Mutual Bank’s community partnerships that support stronger communities and promote fairness, diversity and inclusion, and help provide opportunities for disadvantaged children in Australia.

The Merged Bank is committed to continuing Australian Mutual Bank’s participation in the Australian Mutuals Foundation with an annual contribution of $250,000.

Will this affect our B Corp commitment?

Both Teachers Mutual Bank Limited and Australian Mutual Bank currently have B Corp certification. The Merged Bank will retain this commitment.

Carve out a career you love

As we step into a new year, we inevitably reflect on the year that was. So many people madly scramble to reach the Christmas break and be free from work for a few weeks only to go back a week or so later still feeling dissatisfied and gloomy. It is easy to complain about your job or silently resent it each day. It’s not as easy to take the steps required to find a job that you love. However, having job satisfaction enhances all aspects of your life so maybe it’s worth the hard yards?

Over the Summer holidays or as the beginning of the work year gains momentum set some work life goals for the next 12 months as well as reassess if the way you spend your working day is actually aligned with your life and career goals. Consider making some changes within your working life so you can actually enjoy it. It might mean asking for a better work life balance, requesting a pay rise if your workload has increased, arranging a discussion with management to request a refresh of your role or perhaps seeking out a new job all together.

Does what you do fulfil you? If not, what changes can you make to your working life to ensure you are fulfilled. It could be a matter of looking at why you first decided to take a job at your current place of employment. Do those reasons still attract you or is it time to spread your wings and seek a more fulfilling role elsewhere? A job doesn’t have to be your ‘dream job’ to be fulfilling, but it does have to be enjoyable at least some of the time.

Ask yourself what is it you want out of your working life? What are your values and ideals? What causes do you care about? If you could go back in time, would you still pick the same path you’re currently on? Get clear on what you want to be doing with your life and set yourself some actionable goals to make it happen.

Here are some tips on chasing a career that will make you smile.

Be strong

There is no easy path to success, it takes a clear vision, perseverance, passion and creativity to get to where you want. You will encounter plenty of challenges along the way and ultimately you need to be your own cheer leader. Whether you are working your way up the corporate ladder, striving for success in your current role or stepping into the unknown as an entrepreneur or into a new industry, learning to tackle challenges as they come will provide valuable growth opportunities and help you to develop strategies to avoid problems down the track. Any hurdles you face as you carve out a career you love will force you to think outside the square and may just help you to stand out amongst the crowd.

Words of wisdom

If you want to launch your own business start with workshopping your ideas with (supportive) family and friends for feedback and encouragement. Explore online communities of creatives and entrepreneurs and don’t be shy about asking questions and asking advice to help you figure out where to start. Verbalising your goals not only gets you out of ‘thinking’ and into ‘doing’ but is also helps you to be more accountable. Uttering your ideas to others is the first step to making your dreams a realisation. Next step is refining and developing a strategy, including short-term, time-based goals and a clear end vision.

If you want to change jobs or pursue a different role it is helpful to talk about your work goals with family and friends. Try not to get caught always complaining about the job you currently have. Instead, find ways to up your skillset, network, express your desire to change roles with management or get on job search websites and start to apply for and attend interviews.

Action your goals

The most important step when desiring change is taking action. This could include doing research, acquiring the required skills for the job/business through education and taking measurable steps towards achieving your goals. Develop clarity around your vision and end goals and have a realistic timeframe in which to achieve it. Ensure your short-term goals are being revised and pursued as they are ultimately the stepping stones to the end goal.

Research

Learn from the mistakes of others. Really dive into the workings of your industry and get to know the main players and the newcomers. What do you love? What don’t you like? Assess what is working and what isn’t in your current work situation. How can you create a positive impact, have a point of difference or make change in your industry and be noticed? How can you serve others and create change for good?

Plan

Having a business plan or a career plan will help you to look ahead. Keep it simple but let it keep you on track and guide you.

Money matters

Maintaining some kind of financial fluidity while shifting in your career is important. Ensure you have solid financial backing if you are about to launch a business, being mindful of the high costs a new launch often entails. Have a strategy around paying your bills while you wait for the cheques to roll in. Will you have to work a second job while building your business or attending job interviews? Do you have savings to draw on or perhaps a personal loan will assist you to make the initial investments needed to start up. If you're about to change jobs, ideally don't quit until you've secured a new role, ensuring an income as you transition.

Surrender to the flow

Have space around your goals for yourself. Know that your dreams and your job will evolve and change over time. Your own experience and maturity will bring new elements and wisdom to your offering. Accept that things may turn out differently than you intended, but perhaps will land you somewhere even better.

Regardless of what you do for a job, whether it’s cleaning toilets or managing a team of 50, you experience your job through your own lens of perception based on your attitude. Ultimately you are responsible for how you respond to what happens during your day. Choose to be positive in the workplace, kind to your colleagues and find things to be grateful for within your working life. An ‘attitude of gratitude’ will turn a mundane job into an enjoyable way to earn a living. As the new year slowly unfurls why not take a few steps today to either improve your current working situation or carve out a new career that you will love.

Shop smart this Boxing Day: Tips to avoid scams

After the surge sparked by Black Friday and sustained through the lead up to Christmas, online shopping is expected to pick up again as Boxing Day approaches and with it the risk of scams. As this period draws near, the Customer Owned Banking Association (COBA) is urging consumers to remain vigilant.

“Scammers often use tactics like creating a sense of urgency to get customers to make immediate decisions and payments. Knowing that pressured shoppers are less likely to spot a scam, criminals deliberately target events like Boxing Day sales,” COBA Head of Financial Crimes and Cyber Resilience Martin Latimer explained.

According to ACCC’s Scamwatch, there have been more than $8 million in reported losses from shopping scams in 2025 so far.

To help savvy shoppers stay safe, COBA’s financial crimes team share their expert tips on how to spot, and avoid, such scams.

Beware of fake websites

Scammers often create ‘phantom’ websites that are designed to trick even the savviest shopper.

Latimer urges Australians to be extra cautious when browsing online deals, and to double-check the legitimacy of a website before you decide to make any payments.

Look out for poor website design and spelling or grammatical errors, as well as a lack of customer feedback or reviews for the seller or product.

“Scammers are experts at creating convincing fake websites that closely resemble legitimate retailers. Pay close attention to the domain name, because even a small typo could mean you're on a scam site,” Latimer advised.

Shoppers are urged to verify the site's legitimacy by looking out for a privacy policy, terms and condition, or even contact details - many fake websites don’t include this level of information.

If you are shopping on an Australian website, you can use the Australian Domain Authority’s website register to see which company or trademark registered it.

Don’t click on unsolicited links

Phishing is a tactic criminals use to steal your personal and financial information, such as login credentials or credit card details.

Scammers often send unsolicited emails or messages pretending to be legitimate retailers, delivery companies or payment processors, in an attempt to trick shoppers to click on links or download suspicious attachments.

“A common phishing tactic is a scammer sending an email or text message about a sale or delivery, urging you to click on a link. These links then lead to fake websites or download malware onto your device,” Latimer explained.

“Never open attachments from unknown senders, as they may contain malware. Instead, always go directly to the retailer’s official website.”

Use secure payment methods

Before making any online purchases, make sure your payment is protected. Check that the website shows “https” and a padlock icon to safeguard your financial information.

Latimer added: “Scammers will often encourage you to use untraceable payment methods, like wire transfers or cryptocurrency, so avoid these. Stick to trusted and secure payment methods, which often have built-in buyer protection and fraud prevention features to help safeguard your purchases.”

Trust your instincts. If something appears suspicious or too good to be true, it probably is.

For more tips on how to shop safely online, check out our recent article from the Cyber Weekend sales period.

Supporting young mums and celebrating culture this Christmas

Australian Mutual Bank is proud to support the young mums group at Baabayn Aboriginal Corporation this Christmas, helping spread joy while honouring culture and community.

Baabayn Aboriginal Corporation, founded by local Elders, provides a safe and welcoming space for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families in Western Sydney. Their programs help families heal, connect, and strengthen cultural identity, with the weekly mums group offering an important place for women to share experiences, build relationships and access support.

To celebrate the festive season, Australian Mutual Bank donated gifts to the mums group, carefully selected from Koh Living. These beautifully crafted items showcase artwork created in collaboration with Aboriginal artists, ensuring artists are recognised, supported and celebrated through every design.

By choosing gifts that give back to culture, we were able to support both the young mums in the program and the artists whose stories and traditions are reflected in each piece.

Australian Mutual Bank is committed to meaningful partnerships that foster community wellbeing and cultural connection. We look forward to continuing our support of organisations that make a real and positive difference in the lives of Aboriginal families.
